United Tailoresses Society

The United Tailoresses Society of New York dared to fight for women’s rights during a time when women were expected to be proper and restrained. The tailoresses held a strike to advocate for equal compensation for their work, but received little financial support from their male counterparts and fizzled out. Although they were unsuccessful, their efforts were not entirely in vain; the spark of unionism among tailoresses burned hotter, and several others won better wages and benefits for themselves.
