The natural brightness of the night sky

Part of the Canary Islands is apparently the darkest place on Earth. Data collected from 44 photometers — devices used to measure the brightness of the night sky — stationed all over the globe reveals that the sky around Roque de los Muchachos Observatory may be the best place to witness the majesty of the natural light of the night sky, as artificial light only contributes 2% of the sky’s brightness in that area.
