Although Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs was inspired by the Blackfoot Nation philosophy, it seems that Maslow completely missed some of its most important tenets. Apart from divorcing the individual from the community ー in contrast to the Blackfoot philosophy of the community being responsible for everyone’s needs ー Maslow viewed self-actualization as something to be attained. The Blackfoot Nation believed people are born as their best possible selves, so self-actualization was a matter of living up to that standard instead.

Kai Cheng’s professor had a brilliant scheme. In his first lecture, he promised that each lecture would feature a “Lie of the Day”. But why?
