Teaching Open Source Software in North Korea

A North Korean graduate student seemed to have benefitted thousands of programmers and companies all over the world. In the process of working on his master’s thesis on a “vision-based vehicle detection system” to help with traffic in Pyongyang, a North Korean student optimized the mlpack machine learning library — an open-source library available on GitHub — by removing redundant code, which sped up the compilation process by 25% and cut its memory consumption by more than half.
