When thunderstorms prevent it from looking at the stars, the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) switches gears to give us by far the most accurate and high-resolution images of lightning to date. The LOFAR is a network of thousands of state-of-the-art radio telescopes that can detect the radio pulses created during a lightning flash. Radio pulses are the perfect tool to capture lightning images as they can pierce through thunderclouds and they don’t interfere with the lightning sparks like weather balloons and rockets do.
