Open-source software powers the digital world. Due to its publically available, restriction-free nature, examples of open-source are found everywhere, from cybersecurity agencies to Apple. But, due to its free nature, the ‘maintainers’ – those who perform the software’s upkeep – cannot be expected to prioritise this work, especially without financial reward. Filippo Valsorda suggests that the tech industry should instead professionalise the ‘maintainer’ position, encouraging companies to give back to the open-source community; these professionals would be responsible for tasks such as implementing security practices or adopting industry standards. To curb drug deaths, communities turn to Reddit, texts and wastewater
With drug overdose deaths on the rise, authorities are attempting to curb the epidemic by tracking and sharing information in real time. In one unique effort, a nonprofit in New York City is using drug-testing equipment and stamping or marking habits of dealers to identify drug batches that may endanger users. Other approaches are also being used, such as monitoring drug-related chatter on Reddit and analyzing local wastewater for opioid and other drug levels.
