Research on rodent butts and intestines may lead to hundreds of lives saved. After being hooked up to an intestinal gas ventilation system by researchers, mice were able to survive up to 50 minutes in lethal low-oxygen conditions, where death is normally witnessed after 11 minutes. Although the human respiratory system is more complex, the researchers are hopeful about developing new methods to support critically-ill patients needing oxygen, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
