Micronutrients may be the key to better resilience. Research on the effect of micronutrients on survivors of traumatic events — such as the Christchurch earthquake of 2011 — suggests that micronutrients help people recover from psychological stress. The researchers suspect that it’s because the brain funnels almost all of the body’s resources into the fight or flight response when faced with tragedy, which deprives the body of nutrients needed for mood regulation and DNA repair.
