No batteries? No sweat! Wearable biofuel cells now produce electricity from lactate

Soon, working up a sweat may be able to power electronic devices efficiently. Researchers from Tokyo University of Science have engineered a new type of biofuel cell that draws its power from lactate, a chemical found in sweat. Although lactate-powered cells aren’t new, the researchers’ battery has adapted the technology. The battery is now paper-like, and directs sweat more efficiently to the cells through the capillary effect, similar to how water quickly spreads through a napkin.
