Isle de Jean Charles, a remote coastal island in South Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, is on the verge of complete submersion. As hurricanes continue to batter the island, it has become vulnerable to massive flooding and the destruction of tribal communities. Tribal leaders are appealing to government agencies to preserve the heritage value of the island by building more embankments instead of relocating the residents elsewhere. Even though the government started a lot of relocation projects, these were hampered by a lack of money, not enough jobs, a lack of support from the media, and disagreements between tribal leaders about who should be in charge. Improving media literacy could boost trust towards the news, IMPRESS report suggests
The UK media is regulated by the likes of IPSO and Ofcom. The report by press regulator IMPRESS highlights the link between low levels of media literacy and trust in the news. The study found that three quarters of those who did not know if journalists were regulated did not trust the news. It suggests that improving media literacy is one way to stem the erosion of trust, and shows that audiences have an appetite for information on news processes.
