Hipsters have a surprising history rooted in racism and oppression; Grégory Pierrot recounts how black communities and white enslavers were in a constant cycle of secret mockery and cultural appropriation. Slavers often enacted strict dress codes on slave communities, but those oppressed created an entire language defying enslavers with their clothes.
