Decolonize Hipsters

Hipsters have a surprising history rooted in racism and oppression; Grégory Pierrot recounts how black communities and white enslavers were in a constant cycle of secret mockery and cultural appropriation. Slavers often enacted strict dress codes on slave communities, but those oppressed created an entire language defying enslavers with their clothes. This fashion was then appropriated and spread through Europe; dresses, in particular, were both seen as stylish but provocative due to their Black origins. Read full article here
