Mitochondrial health might be more closely linked with brain health than we initially thought. Multiple studies reveal that defects in mitochondria seem to cause numerous disorders, a majority of which concern the brain. For example, mitochondrial diseases are more prevalent in people with autism spectrum disorder than those without; this could explain why certain factors that affect mitochondrial health (such as air pollution exposure) may heighten the risk for autism for unborn babies.
