In psychology, projection is the attribution of undesirable or unacceptable psychological traits found within yourself to other people as a defence mechanism. Lee Siegel concludes that the New York Times has fallen to this age-old practice. While they call out Republican media for their liberal use of the word “crisis”, they ignore how they themselves harped on unfounded crises ー such as Trump’s “concentration camps at the border” ー to generate outrage and keep people reading their news.

With drug overdose deaths on the rise, authorities are attempting to curb the epidemic by tracking and sharing information in real time. In one unique effort, a nonprofit in New York City is using drug-testing equipment and stamping or marking habits of dealers to identify drug batches that may endanger users. Other approaches are also being used, such as monitoring drug-related chatter on Reddit and analyzing local wastewater for opioid and other drug levels.
