“Dog mess was an unwelcome and very public reminder of bodily functions.” After major cities started to make human defecation a private affair through the spread of lockable toilet doors, middle-class citizens drew their ire towards the rampant “defilement” of roads, vegetation, and lamp posts by dog excrement.
