For two species of sea slugs, a detached head is nothing but a flesh wound. Ecologists from Nara Women’s University have discovered that young green-tinged sea slugs from the genus Elysia are able to detach their heads at will and regrow whole new bodies, complete with hearts. Their secret? It could be because they steal chloroplasts (photosynthesizing cells) from plants, which are said to give them enough energy to sustain the head during the regeneration process.
