In 1897, New Yorkers were baffled by the escape of three sea lions from the Glen Island summer resort. The sea lions were housed in an elliptical fish pond surrounded by a six-foot-high wire fence. How did they escape? Sadly the truth is less adventurous then our imaginations would like: tragically, a woman’s (smuggled) dog revealed a small hole in the fence and ran into the enclosure, only to meet an untimely end at the hands (or, mouths…) of the remaining sea lions.
